Diversify and Conquer
When the walleye get finicky and start acting odd after the first full moon in September, you really need to cover a lot of ground and play lure roulette. These fish tend to have completely empty stomachs and are in the beginning stages of building their egg sacks. It doesn’t make a lot of sense as to why so many are so hesitant to bite, but I have still been putting up good numbers by staying mobile, and trying literally everything I can. Troll for a half hour to find the fish, jig pods of walleye that are suspended off bottom, cast into the shallows, troll deep, vertical jig saddles and humps. Give them everything and odds are you will get some decent fish! I used these strategies with Aaron and Caleb, two clients that were eager to learn how to catch walleye at night. They both broke their personal best and took home 5 eater walleye! Props to the guys for being super patient and having faith in the system. It makes me proud as a guide to know I am guiding future amazing night fishermen!
